The City of Lafayette has amended their building codes, requiring Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles for residential roofing projects, effective March 15, 2021. Roof inspections must include documentation and/or packaging of Class 4 IR Shingles in order to meet compliance of this newly implemented building code amendment.

What are Class 4 IR Shingles?
Class 4 Impact Resistant (IR) Shingles are designed to endure hail damage and high winds. Roofing shingles rated as Class 4 boast an impact resistance rating of UL 2218, which is currently the highest rating for impact resistance in the industry.
Not only can Class 4 Shingles withstand heavy hail, but they can also withstand high winds up to 110mph. Class 4 IR Shingles can be made of copper, resin, aluminum, or plastic, and are ideal for areas that experience regular wind and/or hail occurrences.
The Benefits of Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles
Roofing projects are an investment, and when your property has been impacted by hail or wind damage, the costs of damages can be catastrophic.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, Colorado ranked 2nd for hail loss claims between 2017-2019. In 2020, hail claims paid by State Farm alone were a staggering $3.1 billion, with Colorado coming in at #5 with $207.9 million in losses.
If you own a property in Northern Colorado and need a new roof installed, consider the benefits that Class 4 IR Shingles have to offer:
Minimize Repairs/Replacement
Class 4 IR Shingles are made to hold up against severe wind and storms, which can reduce the need for ongoing roof repair or premature replacement services. A professionally installed Class 4 roofing system results in less damages and expense, making them a sound investment.
Extended Lifespan
The design of the Class 4 Impact Resistant Shingles will reduce the impact of wind and hail, extending the roof’s lifespan, ensuring that your property stays adequately protected year after year.
Saves Money
While Class 4 IR Shingles initially cost more than standard shingles, installing or replacing a roofing system using impact resistant shingles can greatly reduce losses caused by severe storms, saving you money on repair expenses. Not to mention, several insurance companies will offer discounts to homeowners with Class 4 roofs, providing additional savings on insurance premiums.
Prevent Rate Hikes
Due to the increasing costs associated with wind and hail damage, many insurance companies have raised their rates and deductibles, leaving homeowners to pay the price. Installing or replacing a roof with Class 4 IR Shingles may help many homeowners keep their current rates and avoid future rate and deductible hikes at renewal.
